Do QR Codes Expire? The Honest Answer

Feb 20, 2026 · QRmaker Team

This is the most-asked question in QR codes, and the honest answer has two parts.

Static QR codes never expire

A static code has the destination encoded directly into the pattern. There's no server, no subscription, nothing to expire. It will scan correctly in 50 years as long as the destination website still exists.

Dynamic QR codes work as long as the redirect is active

A dynamic code points to a redirect URL. It works as long as that redirect service is running and your account is active. This is by design: it's what lets you edit the destination and track scans. If you stop paying, the redirect can stop — which is why you should choose a provider you trust.

Why some "free" codes die

Some generators create dynamic codes but call them free, then disable the redirect after a trial — killing your printed codes unless you pay. At QRmaker, static codes are genuinely free and permanent, and dynamic codes are clearly a paid feature. No bait and switch.

How to make sure your code lasts

  • For permanent, unchanging links: use a static code.
  • For anything you might edit or want to track: use a dynamic code from a stable provider.
  • Always keep the original destination documented so you can recreate a static code if needed.
