How these still scan

A scanner reads the contrast between light and dark squares, not colour and not edges. Each scene here was generated against the module grid as a constraint, so roof lines, foliage and shadows land where the code needs dark, and sky, water and walls land where it needs light. Nothing is pasted on top.
Error correction buys the artwork room
Every code is generated at the highest error-correction level, so up to 30% of the pattern can be obscured by texture and the scanner still resolves it. That headroom is what lets a scene sit inside the grid instead of beside it, and it is why a busy image can still be read from across a room.
