QR Codes for Safety Data Sheets
The binder is in the office. The spill is in the warehouse.
Safety data sheets have to be available to the people handling the chemical, which in practice means a binder nobody can find and a shared drive nobody can reach from the floor. A QR code on the container, the shelf edge or the cabinet door puts the current SDS on the phone of whoever is standing in front of it. Because a dynamic code is editable, a revised sheet from the supplier replaces the old one behind the same printed label rather than triggering a relabelling exercise.

A QR code supplements the label, it does not replace it
Hazard pictograms, signal words and hazard statements are required on the container itself under GHS-based regimes, and a code is not a substitute for any of them. Treat the code as the route to the full sheet - the sixteen sections nobody can fit on a drum - and keep the regulated label exactly as it must be. Check what your jurisdiction and your customer's site rules require before changing anything about a chemical label.
Plan for the phone that has no signal
Plant rooms, basements and steel-clad warehouses are exactly where signal dies and exactly where the sheet is needed. Two mitigations are worth building in: keep the SDS page light enough to load on a weak connection, and keep a printed set at the point of use as the fallback the code does not remove the need for.
Before you print it
If your safety data sheets code may ever need to point somewhere else, create it as a dynamic QR code you can edit after printing. The printed pattern never changes; only the destination behind it does.

Does a QR code satisfy the requirement to make SDSs available?
Read the rules that apply to your site rather than taking a generator's word for it. Regimes generally require the sheet to be readily accessible to workers, and a code is a good way to achieve that - but it is one route to access, not a legal substitute for the container's own hazard labelling or for any printed copies your regime requires.
What labels survive on a chemical drum?
Chemical-resistant synthetic labels, not paper. Solvent splash and abrasion will take ordinary ink off within weeks. Put the code where it is not in the pour path, and keep a clear white margin so a partly-stained label still reads.
One code per product or per container?
Per product, in almost every case. The sheet is a property of the substance, not the drum, so one code per SKU keeps the label stock manageable and still lands on the right document.
Can I see whether people are using it?
Yes. A dynamic code logs each scan with time, device and rough location, which tells you which sites and which products are actually being looked up - useful for both training and audit.
Do I need an account to make one?
Not for a static code - the generator runs in your browser and you can download without signing up. An account is only needed for dynamic codes, which have to live somewhere so you can edit them later.
